Software Engineer (Rochester, New York)

Whiting Consulting is searching for a Software Engineer for our client, a software development firm in the Rochester, N.Y area. Reporting to the Manager-Architect of Platform Engineering, this individual will be responsible for development on the company's new software platform.

The ideal candidate accurately and efficiently translates the Manager Architect’s vision into world-class enterprise software. He/she brings deep software development experience and wisdom to help create the company’s next generation of applications to the desktop, web, and mobile arenas. This individual is responsible for developing both user interface and server side modules with a focus on developing solutions that are extensible, scalable, and maintainable. Ultimately, the role delivers end-to-end solutions from design and POC to production implementations and post-production support. This individual must understand the value of sound engineering processes and documentation, while also realizing the value of agility. Relevant skills include personal productivity, accountability, requirements-to-deployment lifecycle experience, good communication and documentation skills, .NET development expertise (desktop and web), green-field application development experience, and solid interpersonal skills. The individual must have a track record in incorporating industry standards (existing and emerging) and must have industry experience in the delivery of creative yet practical production software systems that are efficient and perform well under load.

Responsibilities

  • Fully-learns the business context of the software to be developed and the company’s philosophy in customer service.
  • Collaborates with Manager and other teams to understand, analyze, and expand software requirements.
  • Plans and manages self and it service-level oriented.
  • Reports status regularly and manages/escalates risks and issues.
  • Designs, builds, tests proofs-of-concept and production-ready software with a focus on rapid production with quality and adherence to team standards.
  • Provides Manager with creative input and recommendations, and gets on board with solution approaches chosen.
  • Is comfortable and proficient designing, building, and demonstrating working UI prototypes.
  • Efficiently collects feedback, resolves conflicts, and calmly makes recommendations with broad appeal.
  • Education/Experience/Skills

  • Bachelor's degree + 4+ years related experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must have experience with providing post-production Tier 3 and/or 4 support of that application.
  • Understands, practices, and champions a disciplined software engineering approach (i.e., all aspects of the software development lifecycle), including: requirements intake and definition, design, build/unit testing, test scenario planning plus user acceptance, integration, and performance testing, and deployment.
  • Sound documentation practices: setting and following standards, policies, and procedures for the engineering team and others.
  • Possesses practical experience in most of the following areas: C# programming language; (UI Development: WPF and/or Silverlight and/or Flex); Visual Studio 2010 programming environment; Entity Framework object oriented data access; Team Foundation Server configuration management; Object Oriented, MVVM (nice to have), 3 tier, 
Gang of Four, Dependency Injection, online/disconnected, data-driven, rules- based, security (user/role/permission/object), reuse, genericity, abstraction, set-based processing, templating, and publish/subscribe design patterns and models; HTTP and Windows networking; Microsoft SQL Server databases; general software tools (Internet usage, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, 
Project, Visio) Microsoft Outlook, Instant Messenger, and Windows desktop).
  • Other Abilities

  • Language: Reads, analyzes, and interprets general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Writes reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Good presentation and collaboration skills across diverse groups of staff, executives, customers, and external entities.
  • Math: Works with probability and statistical inference. Applies concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Reasoning: Solves practical problems, troubleshoot, and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Can interpret instructions in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, presenting appropriately to diverse audiences such as senior executives, engineering teams, and beta customers. The candidate thinks and works strategically and tactically for self and others.
  • Understands importance of maintaining a collegial, supportive, and professional tone.
